The 2,500 square feet of inviting, calming space within the North Doctors Tower just north of the University of Nebraska Medical Center evokes feelings of hospitality, familiarity and comfort. A glass door leads to the open reception area with a comfy couch and free standing chairs, and the south wall of the reception area is layered in cork. A feminine palette mixes bright, warm and cool colors. In a nod to the complexity of neuroscience, layers of material pill from the walls. By tearing apart and nicking little pieces from the walls, the design subtly suggests the medical undertaking of the office: breaking down barriers to the unknown parts of the brain, and dealing with its mechanics. To the outside corridor, the southeast corner window of the reception area mimics natural light through frosted glass, offering a marquee display of the office name to passers-by. Each of the three doctors housed on the east bay enjoys a private entrance, while a nurses’ station is located centrally to serve as a control point. Exam rooms on the west side are joined by a larger procedure room. Sustainable efforts include low volatile organic compound paints, recycled carpet tiles, fluorescent fixtures and use of existing doors.
